Stone and Glass, “The breaking of a Kouze”
For my final piece as part of my RCA MA, I am creating a performative work entitled “The breaking of a Kouze” which aligns with the Women, Life, Freedom movement in Iran.
To do this I had been attempting to blow a glass vessel inside a ceramic counterpart, with little success. Running out of studio time I have opted to hand build the ceramic vessel around the glass and air dry it for the performance of breaking it off.
I have chosen to also work with a sandstone that lends weight to the concept I am portraying in this piece, as well as creating a material conversation between stones rough texture and the sleekness of glass. I have made all these elemnts seperately as they are not compatible together.
This is something I have learned recently, however I cannot find many examples of attempts at this technique. I will continue to make more work that develops this material language, and seek opportunities where I can perform some material research to find if there are some stones that are compatible with the heat and cohesion of expansion of glass.
